July 31: National Jump For Jelly Beans
Day: -- Not only is it a day set aside to appreciate jelly beans,
but it's also a day to jump for joy simply because they exist!
Jelly beans have been around for more than a century in the U.S.
and have secured themselves a position among the most consumed
candies in the country. It's not only a candy loved by most
Americans, but a candy that even President Ronald Reagan said was
so much his favorite that he gave them out as gifts. And so,
there's little wonder why it's so popular and why two holidays
were created to celebrate it. Even though widely consumed in
America, Jelly beans are not an idea original to America. These
candies have, however, taken precedence over other kinds of
candies in the country, so much so that they were even sent up as
a surprise to astronauts in space. The making of Jelly beans was
inspired by the Turkish confection known as 'Turkish delight,'
which is a soft version of this hard candy. A huge variety of
jelly beans exist where companies that produce the candy make them
in different colors for both aesthetic and identification
purposes. Additionally, a wide variety of flavors are added to the
candy to offer consumers different tastes. Although it's not known
when jelly beans began to be celebrated, two occurrences are
responsible for popularizing it. The first was in the 1860s,
during the American civil war when William Schrafft, owner of a
Boston, candy-producing company urged people to send jelly beans
to soldiers fighting in the civil war as a morale booster. His
marketing strategy proved effective and more people began to
notice and appreciate the candy. The second was when Ronald Reagan
declared jelly beans his favorite candy in the 1960s. During his
reign as president in the 1980s, a jar of it could always be found
on his desk in the White House. He was so in love with jelly beans
that at one point, a flavor was specially made for him. It was
this same fondness for the candy that prompted the president to
regularly give them out as gifts. Besides National Jump for Jelly
Beans Day, another celebration is held in April for the candy,
known simply as National Jelly Bean Day. This goes to show just
how much jelly beans are appreciated. On Sale Until Midnight

July 31: National Mutt Day: -- National
Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed
dogs twice a year on July 31st and December 2nd. Desperately
longing for a new home, millions of loving and healthy mixed breed
dogs in shelters wait for someone to come and adopt them. National
Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect
canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and
trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be
traced and their features a bit murky, their companionship will be
faithful. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs
enter shelters every year. When these abandoned and often abused
animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever
home. Whether you know it or not, their potential is limitless.
Some of the benefits of adoption are often hidden. Human and
canine both enjoy increased physical activity. Another boost is
social interaction through daily walks. While humans develop
patience, their four-legged companion learns to trust and new
limits. For example, as dogs explore the many scents of the human
lifestyle, they usually discover shoes are off-limits. No matter
the breed, size or demeanor of the human, er, canine, the shelter
will take the time to find the right home for their animals. They
schedule visits and have procedures in place to promote healthy
adoptions for families and individuals. While some dogs experience
injury or illness, the shelters work with veterinarians to heal
the animals before making them available for adoption. Of course,
shelters always welcome donations and volunteers. Dogs love
walking, playing and being loved even if they haven't found their
forever home. Every moment they spend socializing increases their
opportunity for adoption. To observe #NationalMuttDay, visit a
shelter; if you are unable to adopt a dog, you can always
volunteer. Post on social media using #NationalMuttDay and
encourage others to join in. Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal
Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, founded National Mutt Day in
2005. Celebrate the day on both December 2 and July 31 of each
year. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

July 31: Uncommon Instrument Awareness
Day: -- It's time for music appreciation, only of the less common
variety! This day is a reminder to music lovers that there are
many special and uncommon instruments just waiting to be
discovered. This unusual holiday encourages everyone to learn
about and try a new and unusual musical instrument. Since as far
back as we can tell, societies have always considered music to be
integral to their culture. The history of uncommon instruments is,
in fact, the history of musical instruments in general. For more
about their history, read Buy A Musical Instrument Day. Today, we
focus on the history of various (now uncommon) musical
instruments. Statues in ancient Cyprus show people playing the
lyre. The British Museum exhibits one such statue of a woman
playing the lyre. Her dress and style indicate she was a member of
the upper class. The ancient Cyprians also used animal-shaped
rattles that might have been used to keep a beat, scare off evil
spirits, or as a toy for young children. The ancient Romans
invented an instrument they called 'hydraulis,' which worked when
water pressure from a tank forced air up into the keys and pipes.
While playing this instrument, they needed multiple assistants to
work the pumps that kept the water pressure high. Ancient Greeks
were also famous for their musical celebrations. Each event -
birth, death, work, and even illness - would be accompanied by
music. They used an instrument called 'auloi,' which was a pipe
made of wood, bone, or metal. Blowing into the reed inserted at
the end of this instrument would produce sound. On the other side
of the continent, in Asia, Buddhists used trumpets made of
different items - like conch shells - to call monks to services.
The ancient Egyptians, too, had their own special musical
instruments, like the harp. Examples of this are shown in scenes
covering the walls of tombs. These scenes show people plucking two
strings at a time, and they are accompanied by instruments that
resemble lutes and oboes. By the 12th century, many more musical
instruments were invented, including a medieval instrument that
resembled a guitar, called the citole. This instrument is actually
the precursor to the violin, having been converted at some point
during the 16th century. Over the years, new, amazing, and
uncommon inventions have increased the expansive variety of
musical instruments. By the 19th century, electric instruments
came around, and along with this, another unique invention. The
Soviet government had sponsored research into proximity sensors. A
researcher on the team accidentally invented an electric
instrument that can be played without being touched. While not a
commercial success initially, it has since been used in film
scores, on television, and occasionally in pop and rock music. We
can trace the history of uncommon instruments around the world,
but we are still unsure about who created this special day. All we
know is they wished to spotlight the unusual and unique musical
instruments. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

July 31: International Lifeguard
Appreciation Day: A day for honoring and appreciating those
professionals, who are saddled with the responsibility of making
sure that pool facilities and beaches are safe for visitors and
ensuring that they too are guarded while they enjoy a swim.
Lifeguards diligently dedicate not only their time but lives to
enabling a safe environment for swimmers. They instruct and keep a
constant watch on guests to prevent injury and rescue them from
life-threatening accidents. Do you know that about 10,000 people
are rescued from drowning yearly by lifeguards? What could be more
heroic than that? The first celebration of Lifeguard Appreciation
Day was in 2020. Ellis & Associates, an organization that
focuses on aquatic safety and risk management, founded the day on
July 31, 2020, to increase appreciation and awareness about the
relentless efforts of lifeguards in making pool facilities safe
for its users. The lifeguard profession became a necessity as a
result of the increasing deaths and injuries recorded in aquatic
facilities more than a century ago. Swimming became popular in
19th century America, where recreational facilities sprung up
everywhere. But the more they opened the more drowning incidents
took place in those facilities. Around 9,000 people reportedly
drown yearly. To curtail these accidents, resorts installed
lifelines in their pools but unfortunately, they were either too
difficult to grab by users or not seen quickly enough. Although a
rescue board was installed thereafter, it still didn't adequately
serve its purpose. As efforts to reduce the frequency of drowning
increased, some communities employed Police officers to serve as
rescue teams at aquatic facilities. This measure, however, brought
a decline in the number of law enforcement agents being present
where needed. Subsequently, local governments decided to hire
experts trained in water rescues. The word 'lifeguard' eventually
became associated with these men and in 1912, the Young Men's
Christian Association organized a lifesaving service to prevent
drowning incidences. Two years later in 1914, the American Red
Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps was founded to train swimmers in
saving lives and giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R.) The
trained swimmers were deployed to their local communities to serve
as lifeguards. Devices were also developed to help save drowning
victims. An example of this is the famous rescue tube invented by
Pete Peterson in 1935. Today, almost all recreational facilities
and beaches employ the services of various lifeguards who
collectively work to bring the levels of drowning incidents down
to the bare minimum. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

July 31: Chronology: Calendars: The
Months Of The Year: -- July ends, the seventh month of the year in
the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the latter being the most
widely used calendar in the world. It was named by the Roman
Senate in honour of Roman general, statesman and dictator Julius
Caesar (July 12 or 13 100 BC - March 15, 44 BC), being the month
of his birth. Before then it was called Quintilis, being the fifth
month of the calendar that started with March. A member of the
First Triumvirate, Gaius Julius Caesar led the Roman armies in the
Gallic Wars before defeating his political rival Pompey in a civil
war. He subsequently became dictator from 49 BC until his
assassination in 44 BC. Caesar played a critical role in the
events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise
of the Roman Empire. July's length is 31 days. July succeeds June
and precedes August. July is on average the warmest month in most
of the Northern Hemisphere, where it is the second month of
summer, and the coldest month in much of the Southern Hemisphere,
where it is the second month of winter. The second half of the
year commences in July. In the Southern Hemisphere, July is the
seasonal equivalent of January in the Northern hemisphere. "Dog
days" are considered to begin in early July in the Northern
Hemisphere, when the hot sultry weather of summer usually starts.
Spring lambs born in late winter or early spring are usually sold
before July 1. July's birthstone is the ruby, which symbolizes
contentment. Its birth flowers are the larkspur and the water
lily. The zodiac signs are Cancer (until July 22) and Leo (July 23
onward). On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Armada: Spanish Armada TV Series + Bonus MP4 Video Download DVD
July 31, 1588: The European Wars Of
Religion: The Eighty Years' War (The Dutch Revolt): The
Anglo-Spanish Wars: The Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604): The Spanish
Armada (The Invincible Armada, The Enterprise Of England [Spanish:
Grande Y Felicisima Armada, "Great And Most Fortunate
Navy"]): -- The Spanish Armada is first spotted off the coast
of England, two days after the July 29, 1588 Battle Of Gravelines
took place, where English naval forces under the command of Lord
Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake defeated the Spanish Armada
off the coast of Gravelines, France. The small port of Gravelines
was then part of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, close to the
border with France and the closest Spanish territory to England.
Medina Sidonia tried to re-form his fleet there and was reluctant
to sail further east knowing the danger from the shoals off
Flanders, from which his Dutch enemies had removed the sea marks.
The English had learned more of the Armada's strengths and
weaknesses during the skirmishes in the English Channel and had
concluded it was necessary to close within 100 yards (91 m) to
penetrate the oak hulls of the Spanish ships. They had spent most
of their gunpowder in the first engagements and had, after the
Isle of Wight, been forced to conserve their heavy shot and powder
for a final attack near Gravelines. During all the engagements,
the Spanish heavy guns could not easily be run in for reloading
because of their close spacing and the quantities of supplies
stowed between decks, as Francis Drake had discovered on capturing
the damaged Rosario in the Channel. Instead the gunners fired once
and then jumped to the rigging to attend to their main task as
marines ready to board enemy ships, as had been the practice in
naval warfare at the time. In fact, evidence from Armada wrecks in
Ireland shows that much of the fleet's ammunition was never spent.
Their determination to fight by boarding, rather than cannon fire
at a distance, proved a weakness for the Spanish; it had been
effective on occasions such as the battles of Lepanto and Ponta
Delgada (1582), but the English were aware of this strength and
sought to avoid it by keeping their distance. With its superior
manoeuvrability, the English fleet provoked Spanish fire while
staying out of range. The English then closed, firing repeated and
damaging broadsides into the enemy ships. This also enabled them
to maintain a position to windward so that the heeling Armada
hulls were exposed to damage below the water line. Many of the
Spanish gunners were killed or wounded by the English broadsides,
and the task of manning the cannon often fell to the regular foot
soldiers on board, who did not know how to operate the guns. The
ships were close enough for sailors on the upper decks of the
English and Spanish ships to exchange musket fire. After eight
hours, the English ships began to run out of ammunition, and some
gunners began loading objects such as chains into cannons. Around
4:00 pm, the English fired their last shots and were forced to
pull back. Five Spanish ships were lost. The galleass San Lorenzo,
flagship of Don Hugo de Moncada, ran aground at Calais and was
taken by Howard after murderous fighting between the crew, the
galley slaves, the English who eventually killed all Spanish and
slaves, and the French, who ultimately took possession of the
wreck. The galleons San Mateo and San Felipe drifted away in a
sinking condition, ran aground on the island of Walcheren the next
day, and were taken by the Dutch. One carrack ran aground near
Blankenberge; another foundered. Many other Spanish ships were
severely damaged, especially the Portuguese and some Spanish
Atlantic-class galleons (including some Neapolitan galleys) which
had to bear the brunt of the fighting during the early hours of
the battle in desperate individual actions against groups of
English ships. The Spanish plan to join with Parma's army had been
defeated and the English had gained some breathing space, but the
Armada's presence in northern waters still posed a great threat to
England. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Nevada, after surviving hits from two atomic bombs (Atom Bombs

in mid July, and after surviving being used for target practice by
USS Iowa and two other ships southwest of Pearl Harbor, is at last
sunk by an aerial torpedo hit amidships. USS Nevada (BB-36), the
second United States Navy ship to be named after the 36th state,
was the lead ship of the two Nevada-class battleships. Launched in
1914, Nevada was a leap forward in dreadnought technology; four of
her new features would be included on almost every subsequent US
battleship: triple gun turrets, oil in place of coal for fuel,
geared steam turbines for greater range, and the "all or
nothing" armor principle. These features made Nevada,
alongside its sister ship Oklahoma, the first US Navy
"standard-type" battleships. Nevada served in both World
Wars. During the last few months of World War I, Nevada was based
in Bantry Bay, Ireland, to protect supply convoys that were
sailing to and from Great Britain. In World War II, it was one of
the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
Nevada was the only battleship to get underway during the attack,
making the ship "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal
and depressing morning" for the United States. Still, it was
hit by one torpedo and at least six bombs while steaming away from
Battleship Row, forcing the crew to beach the stricken ship on a
coral ledge. The ship continued to flood and eventually slid off
the ledge and sunk to the harbor floor. Nevada was subsequently
salvaged and modernized at Puget Sound Navy Yard, allowing it to
serve as a convoy escort in the Atlantic and as a fire-support
ship in five amphibious assaults (the invasions of Attu, Normandy,
Southern France, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa). At the end of World War
II, the Navy decided that Nevada was too old to be retained, so
they assigned it to be a target ship in the Nuclear Testing At
Bikini Atoll experiments at Bikini Atoll in July 1946 (Operation
Crossroads). After those tests, deemed unfit for further service,
Nevada was decommissioned on August 29, 1946 and sunk for naval
gunfire practice on July 31, 1948. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight

The Battle Of Alexandria: -- Mark Antony achieves a minor victory
over Octavian's forces, but most of his army subsequently deserts,
leading to his suicide the following day, August 1, 30 BC. In
early August, Octavian launched a second, ultimately successful,
invasion of Egypt. The Final War of the Roman Republic, also known
as Antony's Civil War or The War between Antony and Octavian, was
the last of the Roman Civil Wars of the Roman Republic, fought
between Mark Antony (assisted by Cleopatra) and Octavian. After
the Roman Senate declared war on the Egyptian queen Cleopatra,
Antony, her lover and ally, betrayed the Roman government and
joined the war on Cleopatra's side. After the decisive victory for
Octavian at the Battle of Actium on 2 September 31 BC, Cleopatra
and Antony withdrew to Alexandria, where Octavian besieged the
city until both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide. Following
the end of the war, Octavian brought peace to the Roman state that
had been plagued by a century of civil wars. Octavian became the
most powerful man in the Roman world and the Senate bestowed upon
him the name of Augustus in 27 BC. Octavian, now Augustus, would
be the first Roman Emperor and would transform the
oligarchic/democratic Republic into the autocratic Roman Empire.
The last Republican Civil War would mark the beginning of the Pax
Romana, which remains the longest period of peace and stability
that Europe has seen in recorded history. On Sale Until Midnight

high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface during the final
minutes of flight up to impact. The spacecraft carried six
television vidicon cameras - two wide-angle (channel F, cameras A

and probability of obtaining high-quality video pictures. Ranger 7
transmitted over 4,300 photographs during the final 17 minutes of
its flight. After 68.6 hours of flight, the spacecraft landed

15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin become the first to ride
in a Lunar Roving Vehicle, also known as a Moon Rover or Lunar
Rover, a space exploration vehicle (rover) designed to move across
the surface of the Moon. The day before, on July 30, 1971,
Astronaut Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin
on the Apollo Extended Lunar Module Falcon landed on the Moon with
the first Lunar Rover. Apollo 15 was launched July 26, 1971,
13:34:00.6 UTC from Kennedy Space Center with Astronauts David
Scott, James Irwin and Alfred Worden aboard. Apollo 15 was the
ninth manned mission in the United States' Apollo program, the
fourth to land on the Moon, and the eighth successful manned
mission. It was the first of what were termed "J missions"
(longer three-day stays using an Extended Lunar Module weighing
2,900 pounds heaver than the initial LM model, with three LEVAs
and a Lunar Roving Vehicle (Apollo 15, Apollo 16, Apollo 17)),
with a greater focus on science than had been possible on previous
missions. A recording of the launch was included in the Sounds of
Earth carried by the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 space probes. The
mission began on July 26, 1971, and ended on August 7. At the
time, NASA called it the most successful manned flight ever
achieved. Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin
spent three days on the Moon, including 18 1/2 hours outside the
spacecraft on lunar extra-vehicular activity (EVA). The mission
landed near Hadley Rille, in an area of the Mare Imbrium called
Palus Putredinus (Marsh of Decay). The crew explored the area
using the first lunar rover, which allowed them to travel much
farther from the Lunar Module (LM) than had been possible on
missions without the rover. They collected 77 kilograms (170 lb)
of lunar surface material. At the same time, Command Module Pilot
Alfred Worden orbited the Moon, using a Scientific Instrument
Module (SIM) in the Service Module (SM) to study the lunar surface
and environment in great detail with a panoramic camera, a
gamma-ray spectrometer, a mapping camera, a laser altimeter, a
mass spectrometer, and a lunar subsatellite deployed at the end of
Apollo 15's stay in lunar orbit (an Apollo program first). The
mission successfully accomplished its objectives, but was marred
by negative publicity that accompanied disclosure of the crew
carrying unauthorized postage stamps which they had planned to
sell after their return. Ironically, this mission was one of very
few that had been honored with the issue of a commemorative US
stamp, with this first use of a lunar rover happening one decade
after the first Mercury astronaut launch. On Sale Until Midnight

July 31, 1932: The Interwar Period (The
Interbellum, Between The Wars): The Weimar Republic (The German
Reich, The German Republic): The Road To War: The July 1932 German
Federal Election -- The NSDAP (Nazi Party) wins more than 37% of
the vote for seats in the Reichstag (the Lower House of the Weimar
Republic's Legislature) in German elections, held following the
premature dissolution of the Reichstag. They saw great gains by
the Nazi Party, which for the first time became the largest party
in parliament but without winning a majority. Since 1929, Germany
had been suffering from the Great Depression as unemployment rose
from 8.5% to nearly 30% between 1929 and 1932, while industrial
production inside Germany dropped roughly 42%. In 1930, the
governing grand coalition of the pro-republican parties led by the
Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the German Centre
Party (also known as the Catholic Centre Party) had broken apart.
Reichsprasident Paul von Hindenburg had then appointed a minority
government headed by the Centre Party's Heinrich Bruning that
could govern only via the emergency powers given to Hindenburg to
deal with the economic and political crisis. Shortly afterwards,
in the 1930 elections, the democratic parties lost their majority
in the Reichstag, making any parliamentary government impossible.
The elections also saw Hitler's Nazi Party rise to national
prominence, which became the largest party for the first time.
Bruning's policies, implemented via presidential decree and
tolerated by parliament, failed to solve the economic crisis while
weakening the parliamentary system. In March 1932, presidential
elections pitted the incumbent Hindenburg, supported by
pro-democratic parties, against Hitler and communist Ernst
Thalmann. Hitler gained roughly a third of the vote and was thus
defeated in the second round in April by Hindenburg, who gained a
narrow majority. However, Hindenburg at the end of May 1932 was
persuaded to dismiss Bruning as chancellor, replacing him with
Franz von Papen, a renegade of the Centre Party, and a
non-partisan "Cabinet of Barons". Papen's cabinet had
almost no support in parliament and only three days after his
appointment, when faced with the opposition, had Hindenburg
dissolve the Reichstag and called for new elections, for 31 July,
so that the Reichstag could not dismiss him immediately. The
election campaign took place under violent circumstances, as Papen
lifted the token ban on the SA, the Nazi paramilitary, which
Bruning had banned during the last days of his administration.
That inevitably led to clashes with the communist paramilitants.
The elections resulted in great gains by the Nazi Party; with 230
seats, it was the first time that the largest party in parliament
did not go on to form a government. Neither the Nazi Party nor
Hindenburg had a governing majority, and the other parties refused
co-operation. Neither side had a majority on its own, and no
coalition could be formed to create a governing majority. Thus,
Papen's minority government continued, leading to another election
in November, which saw a significant drop in votes for the Nazi
Party and increases for the Communists and the national
conservative DNVP. It was the last free and fair all-German
election before the Nazi seizure of power on 30 January 1933. On

July 31, 1923: #BOTD: #HBD! Ahmet
Ertegun, Turkish-American businessman, composer, singer,
songwriter, record producer and philanthropist, co-founder and
president of Atlantic Records (d. December 14, 2006) is #born
Ahmet Zahrettin Sebuhi Ertegun in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire
(now Istanbul, Turkey). Ahmet Ertegun discovered, championed, and
is the businessman most responsible for popularizing, the earliest
pioneers and many of the leading rhythm and blues, rock and roll
and rock musicians. Ertegun also wrote classic blues and pop
songs. He served as the chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
and museum, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Ertegun has been described
as "one of the most significant figures in the modern
recording industry." In 2017 he was inducted into Rhythm &
Blues Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in the music
business. Ertegun helped foster ties between the U.S. and Turkey,
his birthplace. He served as the chairman of the American Turkish
Society for over 20 years until his death. He also co-founded the
New York Cosmos soccer team of the original North American Soccer
League. In 1946, Ertegun became friends with Herb Abramson, a
dental student and A & R man (Artists & Repitoire man,
nowadays called a producer) for National Records, and they decided
to start a new independent record label for gospel, jazz, and R &
B music. Financed by family dentist Dr. Vahdi Sabit, they formed
Atlantic Records in September 1947 in New York City. The first
recording sessions took place that November. In 1949, after 22
unsuccessful record releases, including the first recordings by
Professor Longhair, Atlantic had its first major hit with Stick
McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee". The company
expanded through the 1950s, with Jerry Wexler and, later,
Ertegun's brother Nesuhi on board as partners. Hit artists that
recorded on Atlantic included Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, The
Clovers, The Drifters, The Coasters LaVern Baker, Etta James, Ray
Charles and many more. Like the Erteguns, many independent record
executives were from immigrant backgrounds, including the Bihari
and the Chess brothers. The Ertegun brothers brought a jazz
sensibility (and many jazz artists) into R & B, successfully
combining blues and jazz styles from around the country. Atlantic
helped challenge the primacy of the major labels of the time by
discovering, developing, and nurturing new talent. It became the
premier rhythm and blues label in a few years and, with the help
of innovative engineer/producer Tom Dowd, set new standards in
producing high-quality recordings. Atlantic was among the first
labels to record in stereo, and in 1957 was the first record
company to utilize an 8-track tape machine. Ertegun himself wrote
a number of classic blues songs under the pseudonym "A.
Nugetre" ("Ertegun" backwards). He also wrote the
Ray Charles hit "Mess Around", with lyrics that drew
heavily on "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie". He was briefly
listed as "Nuggy" in the credits before changing to "A.
Nugetre". Ertegun was part of the shouting choral group on
Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll", along with Wexler and
songwriter Jesse Stone. He also wrote "Ting A Ling", a
1956 hit for The Clovers that was covered by Buddy Holly. "Fool,
Fool, Fool", another Clovers song was a hit for Kay Starr.
His "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" was recorded by
Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, and in an international version by
Adriano Celentano. The lyrics of "Lovey Dovey" by the
Clovers were used to a different tune by Steve Miller in his hit
"The Joker". Ahmet Ertegun died at New York-Presbyterian
Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center (sic) while in a coma
following an October 29, 2006 fall onto a concrete floor at a
Rolling Stones concert at the Beacon Theatre at West 74th Street)
on Broadway in Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City. He is
buried in the Ertegun family plot at Ozbekler Tekkesi (Uzbek
Dervish Lodge) cemetery in Uskudar Ilcesi, Istanbul, Turkey. On

American pop-rock singer, and drummer, leader of the 1960s era pop
and rock group Gary Lewis & The Playboys, best known for their
1965 Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "This Diamond Ring",
which was the first of a string of hit singles they had in 1965
and 1966, son of Jerry Lewis, is #born Gary Harold Lee Levitch in
Newark, New Jersey into the family of comedian Jerry Lewis of
Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish ancestry and singer Patti Palmer
of Swiss Catholic ancestry. His mother, who was performing at the
time with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra, intended to name him after
her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but her son became "Gary"
as the result of a clerical error. He received a set of drums as a
gift for his 15th birthday in 1960. When he was 18, Lewis formed
the band "Gary and the Playboys" with four friends.
Joking at the lateness of bandmates to practice, Lewis referred to
them as "playboys", and the name stuck. The band had an
earnest, boy-next-door image similar to British invasion
contemporaries such as Herman's Hermits and Gerry and the
Pacemakers. The group folded in 1970, but a version of the band
later resumed touring and continues to tour, often playing for
veterans' benefits. When Jerry Lewis died, he disgracefully
disinherited Gary and all of Lewis's children and grandchildren
from his marriage to Palmer. Gary, who knew this was going ot
happen, publicly called his father a "mean and evil person"
and said that Lewis never showed him or his siblings any love or
care. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Young, African American civil rights leader (b. March 11, 1971) is
#born Whitney Moore Young Jr. in Shelby County, Kentucky, U.S. His
father, Whitney M. Young Sr., was the president of the Lincoln

Educational Association. Whitney's mother, Laura (Ray) Young, was
a teacher who served as the first female postmistress in Kentucky
(second in the United States), being appointed to that position by
President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940. Trained as a social
worker, he spent most of his career working to end employment
discrimination in the United States and turning the National Urban
League from a relatively passive civil rights organization into
one that aggressively worked for equitable access to socioeconomic
opportunity for the historically disenfranchised. Young was
influential in the United States federal government's War on
Poverty in the 1960s, and was an organizer of the August 28, 1963
March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom. Whitney Young died aged
49 when he drowned while swimming with friends in Lagos, Nigeria,

July 31, 1941: The European Civil War:
World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of
World War II): The Holocaust (Shoah): The Reich Chancellery
Meeting Of 12 December 1941: -- Under instructions from Adolf
Hitler, Nazi leader Hermann Goering orders SS General Reinhard
Heydrich to "submit to me as soon as possible a general plan
of the administrative material and financial measures necessary
for carrying out the desired Final Solution of the Jewish
question." The Final Solution (German: Endlosung), or the
Final Solution to the Jewish Question (German: Die Endlosung Der
Judenfrage) was a Nazi plan for the extermination of the Jews
during World War II. The "Final Solution of the Jewish
Question" was the official code name for the murder of all
Jews within reach, which was not limited to the European
continent. This policy of deliberate and systematic genocide
starting across German-occupied Europe was formulated in
procedural and geo-political terms by Nazi leadership in January
1942 at the Wannsee Conference near Berlin, and culminated in the
Holocaust, which saw the killing of 90 percent of Jewish Poles,
and two thirds of the Jewish population of Europe. The nature and
timing of the decisions that led to the Final Solution is an
intensely studied and debated aspect of the Holocaust. The program
evolved during the first 25 months of war leading to the attempt
at "murdering every last Jew in the German grasp". Most
historians agree, wrote Christopher Browning, that the Final
Solution cannot be attributed to a single decision made at one
particular point in time. "It is generally accepted the
decision-making process was prolonged and incremental." In
1940, following the Fall of France, Adolf Eichmann devised the
Madagascar Plan to move Europe's Jewish population to the French
colony, but the plan was abandoned for logistical reasons, mainly
a naval blockade. There were also preliminary plans to deport Jews
to Palestine and Siberia. In 1941, wrote Raul Hilberg, in the
first phase of the mass murder of Jews, the mobile killing units
began to pursue their victims across occupied eastern territories;
in the second phase, stretching across all of German-occupied
Europe, the Jewish victims were sent on death trains to
centralized extermination camps built for the purpose of
systematic implementation of the Final Solution. On July 31, 1941,
under orders from Hitler, Goering ordered SS General Reinhard
Heydrich to "submit to me as soon as possible a general plan
of the administrative material and financial measures necessary
for carrying out the desired Final Solution of the Jewish
question." On December 12, 1941, Adolf Hitler declared the
imminent extermination of the Jews to the highest-ranking
officials of the Nazi Party assembled at that day's Reich
Chancellery meeting. Almost all important party leaders were
present to hear Hitler declare the ongoing destruction of the
Jewish race, yet it remains less known than the later Wannsee
Conference, which decided the details of the "final solution
of the to the Jewish question". Attendance at this meeting
was obligatory for Nazis in high party offices. No official list
of the people who attended this meeting with Hitler exists, but
out of the about 50 present, the leaders of Nazi Germany known to
have been there were Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Goebbels, Martin
Bormann, Hans Frank and Philipp Bouhler; Hermann Goering was not
there, the second most powerful man in Germany and one of the
original Nazi Party leaders, because at that time he did not hold
a party office as he was commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe.
Goebbels wrote in his diary for that date: "Regarding the
Jewish Question, the Fuehrer has decided to make a clean sweep. He
prophesied to the Jews that, if they yet again brought about a
world war, they would experience their own annihilation. That was
not just a phrase. The world war is here, and the annihilation of
the Jews must be the necessary consequence.". This meeting of
Hitler' undermines claims that he was ignorant of the Holocaust,
and that it was carried out by subordinates without his knowledge;
rather, the Holocaust was the logical conclusion of his orders and
intentions, spelled out in this meeting. On January 20, 1942, The
Wannsee Conference was held in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee. The
Wannsee Conference was a meeting of senior government officials of
Nazi Germany and Schutzstaffel (SS) leaders, held in the Berlin
suburb of Wannsee on 20 January 1942. The purpose of the
conference, called by the director of the Reich Main Security
Office SS-Obergruppenfuehrer Reinhard Heydrich, was to ensure the
cooperation of administrative leaders of various government
departments in the implementation of the so-called "Final
Solution to the Jewish question" (German: Endlosung der
Judenfrage), whereby most of the Jews of German-occupied Europe
would be deported to Poland and murdered. Conference attendees
included representatives from several government ministries,
including state secretaries from the Foreign Office, the justice,
interior, and state ministries, and representatives from the SS.
In the course of the meeting, Heydrich outlined how European Jews
would be rounded up and sent to extermination camps in the General
Government (the occupied part of Poland), where they would be
killed. Soon after the Invasion Of Poland in September 1939, the
persecution of European Jewry was raised to unprecedented levels,
but systematic killing of men, women and children only began in
June 1941 after the onset of Operation Barbarossa against the
Soviets. On 31 July 1941 Hermann Goering gave written
authorization to Heydrich to prepare and submit a plan for a
"total solution of the Jewish question" in territories
under German control and to coordinate the participation of all
involved government organisations. At Wannsee, Heydrich emphasized
that once the mass deportation was complete, the SS would take
complete charge of the exterminations. A secondary goal was to
arrive at a definition of who was formally Jewish and thus
determine the scope of the genocide. One copy of the Protocol with
circulated minutes of the meeting survived the war. It was found
by Robert Kempner in March 1947 among files that had been seized
from the German Foreign Office. It was used as evidence in the
Subsequent Nuremberg Trials. The Wannsee House, site of the
conference, is now a Holocaust memorial. On Sale Until Midnight

July 31, 1492: Discrimination: Jewish
History: Expulsions And Exoduses Of Jews: The Alhambra Decree (The
Edict Of Expulsion, The Edict Of Expulsion Of Jews From Spain): --
The Jews are expelled from Spain when the Alhambra Decree, also
known as the Edict of Expulsion (Spanish: Decreto de la Alhambra,
Edicto de Granada) takes effect. The Alhambra Decree was an edict
issued on March 31, 1492 by Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II
Of Aragon, the joint Catholic Monarchs of Spain, ordering their
150,000 Jewish and Muslim subjects to convert to Christianity or
face expulsion from their territories and possessions by July 31
of that year. The primary purpose was to eliminate their influence
on Spain's large former Jewish converso (coverted to Christianity,
"New Christians") population, and to thereby ensure they
did not revert to Judaism. Over half of Spain's Jews had converted
as a result of the religious persecution and pogroms which
occurred in 1391; due to continuing attacks, around 50,000 more
had converted by 1415. A further number of those remaining chose
to convert to avoid expulsion. As a result of the Alhambra Decree
and persecution in prior years, over 200,000 Jews converted to
Catholicism and between 40,000 and 100,000 were expelled, an
unknown number returning to Spain in the years following the
expulsion. This led to Mass migration of Jews from Spain to Italy,
Greece and the Mediterranean Basin. This can be seen with Jewish
Surnames as they began to show up in Italy and Greece at this
time, like Faraggi, Farag and Farachi a surname which orignates
from the Spanish City of Fraga. The edict was formally and
symbolically revoked on December 16, 1968, following the Second
Vatican Council. This was a full century after Jews had been
openly practicing their religion in Spain and synagogues were once
more legal places of worship under Spain's Laws of Religious
Freedom. In 1924, the regime of Primo de Rivera granted Spanish
citizenship to the entire Sephardic Jewish diaspora. In 2014, the
government of Spain passed a law allowing dual citizenship to
Jewish descendants who apply, to "compensate for shameful
events in the country's past." Thus, Sephardi Jews who can
prove they are the descendants of those Jews expelled from Spain
because of the Alhambra Decree can "become Spaniards without
leaving home or giving up their present nationality." On Sale
